Geoffrey Hinton’s Stark Alert: AI Could Outthink Humans—and Soon
Geoffrey Hinton helped create the technology behind today’s AI boom.
Now he’s sounding the alarm.
He says AI is advancing far faster than expected—and we’re losing control.
Hinton gave this interview just after resigning from Google. He left so he could speak freely. And he’s not holding back.
I Listened to Alesia
Unlike other talks I’ve reviewed, I didn’t stumble across this one based on an algorithm. After I delivered an AI workshop, Alesia one of the participants, recommended that I check it out. I’m glad I did.
AI Scientist Admits he was Wrong
Hinton admits he was wrong.
Initially, he thought we’d have plenty of time to adjust to this innovation and put in regulations. After all, it would be 30 or maybe 50 years.
Now, he realizes, AI could surpass human intelligence in just a few years—not decades.
EXISTential Risks
He warns that advanced AI might pursue goals that are dangerous to humanity’s existence. Not because it’s inherently evil—but because we failed to guide it properly.
Call for Regulation
Unlike past tech innovations, this isn’t coming from the government of the Department of Defense. It’s private companies that are out in front.
Hinton says companies can’t be left to police themselves. Governments need to act now—before we face consequences we can’t reverse.
What decisions being made today are reversible?
What decisions can’t be changed?
Who should decide the future?
Don’t say, “ChatGPT!”
